Just thought I’d share some of my memory hooks that help me remember some of the more obscure commands, shortcuts, and concepts in the dev world. I’ll add to this over time as I come up with new ones / come across others I think are too good not to share.

Reverse Incremental Search (Ctrl+R / Ctrl+S)

Once you’re in the terminal’s incremental history search, it’s easy to forget which direction Ctrl+R and Ctrl+S take you.

  • Ctrl+R = Reverse - takes you backward through your history (older commands)
  • Ctrl+S = Skipped - takes you forward (back toward commands you already skipped past with Ctrl+R)
